Electroputas - XX RECORDS

Electroputas from Barcelona got a new album and a new compilation out, on their freshly founded own label XX Records. As Spain is headquarter for multicultural music and bastard sounds, Electroputas just combine their love for eclecticism, genre smashing and their own roots. The result is a mixture of Flamenco, sounds from the 20's and digitalism. Music fuses with videoart and fresh beats hit chants from periods time ago.

Electroputas love to play with contradictions and breaks, electronic sounds and melodies, bastard mixes and colorful visuals. But at the same time they represent what Barcelona is: A vast mixture of rough culture of many influences, traditional sounds and techno, past and future.

The project that started in 2004 with Edu Chifonis and Toni Bello as bass and beatmakers, was soon completed with Danilillo as the visuals expert. From the beginnings in old Bodegas in Barcelonas underground, Electroputas now made their way up to festivals all across Europe and a tour through the whole of Spain in 2008.

Scribes "Not many" in Remix Version from DAM

Yeah, DAM, the only and first hip hop group from Palestine, are really rockin it.They have been in Berlin to performe here last year and now they are making their way up all around the world. Scribe on the other hand is a dude from New Zealand who lend his song to those dudes from Palestine to get something real fresh out of it! All recorded for "Macking Tracks" by Nick Dwyer. And the story behind: Dam had seen the music video to that song before on tour, but never got to see the name of the artist (Scribe). And they loved it. And then two years later Nick Dwyer sends them the track and asks them to rap on it. So DAM was pretty WOW. Global connections and coincidents :D

Legendary DJ pioneer DJ Rupture aka Jayce Clayton returned after 7 years in Spain back to the States, to release his new album "UPROOT" on The Agriculture. Well-known for his turntabelism skills and his profound knowledge of hip hop, ragga, eclectic fusion and global sounds, he now defines the word rupture in a new way.

"Uproot" goes straight into the dubstep direction, defining itself by dark basslines, harmonic piano interludes, string sections, breaking beats and a very unique way to bring artists from different musical backgrounds together. It's not one of the usual soft, ever same sounding mixtapes. "Uproot " needs some special attention, to reveal it's own logic to you and Claytons way of bringing things together. "Uproot" is a two-piece release with the original tracks on one CD and the DJ mixes on the other one. That's special. Furthermore, the "Ingredients" are free to download, so that you get to see what happened with them after they went through the hands of a sound architect. All in all t"Uproot" is made of several unreleased tracks by artists such as Filastine from Ruptures Soot label, Ghislain Poirier, Maga Bo from Brazil, Prof. Shehab, 77 Klash and Team Shadetek from Brooklyn and Breakcore-Freak Istafari Lasterfahrer from Hamburg. However, as DJ Rupture states himself, "Uproot" is an album to "sink in", obviously not to dance the night away, as his live actions or his first mix "Gold Tieth Theef" were before.

And that's the point. I just remember this crazy party in Barcelona's La Makabra (which has been torn down by now), where people were piling all the way down to the place to get in. I've never seen La Makabra so crowded, and therefore expected "Uproot "to be more partying. But things change, La Makabra doesnt exist anymore, the party was like three years ago and we are in the era of dubstep. So Uproot is not comparible to DJ Rupture turntablism and live actions, it's a kind of it's own. But as interesting as well. May it be the Spanish squat scene or dubstep or the global sound investigations that lead Jayce Clayton to "Uproot", it's certainly very remarkable and not to be mixed upt with any other release of any other DJ.

Juakali - Breakground

Yeah, Juakali, MC and producer from New York, celebrates his first EP Breakground (GunJah Records /Foreign Familiar) virtually on Dec 2 and throws out some reggae, electro, bass heavy dub sound clash mixes!

Juakali is from Trinidad but lives in New York. He's been around the scene a lot before and made himself a name as resident MC at New York’s dubstep event Dub War and at the well-known Sub Swara parties. Furthermore Juakali appeared in several collaborations with Dub Gabriel on "Anarchy & Alchemy", on Process Rebel "Other Weapons", as well as on Sub Swara and Badawi releases (which we actually presented some years ago on Berlin's Voice of Culture). And: Juakali calls for revolution through change in a new way: "Revolution now", the first single, celebrates community and cooperation as the roots of justice and peace. That's a statement.

Juakali has been influenced a lot through New Yorks dub scene and through his travels. In 2006 he even performed at FIFA World Cup, so that the magazines called him an artist "on the forefront of the Reggae, Jungle and burgeoning Dubstep scene in the US and around the world."

MAGA BO - ARCHIPELAGOES // NEW ALBUM ON STREETS

Soundlandscapes. Worldwide Migration. Unknown artists. Street credibility. Maga Bo. Archipelagoes.

Maga Bo is from Rio. And Maga Bo likes travelling. He goes far South to find music far away from mainstream productions (and yes, I'm a fan of globalized underground mainstream sounds!).
If he's not working as a sound engineer in Rio, he's travelling, recording, producing and giving production classes in Africa. As a natural result of this, his first album " Archipelagoes" was born and embraced in the family of DJ Ruptures Soot Records. You see, Maga Bo is active.

He's played all over the place from Zanzibar to Senegal to New York to Sri Lanka and so forth. And lately he even made it to London's Fabric, which to me is pretty much impressive, bearing in mind that Fabric is known for electro, drum n bass and raves, and Maga Bo is someone coming from a world music background. See, globalization in music is coming closer and closer!

Anyways, this guy has some defenite production skills to offer, which give Archipelagoes this rough, street style, electronic, dark, hip hop, oriental ragga touch. He travelled all the way to bring a couple of street musicins together, which brings people into our focus who we usually would never ever hear of in our modern Western lives. Collaborations include the Senegalese hiphop godfathers Pee Froiss, new school Moroccan rap heroes Bigg and K-Libre, ragga dancehall man Teba from Cape Town, Zanzibari taarab master Mohammed issa Matona and many more. In fact every of the 12 songs is a collaboration.

Archipelagoes is a world record, for globalized people. A migration in sound as a result of globalization, a mixture of styles, sounds, ethnicities and cultures. Sound is migrating and so does Maga Bo. Archipelagoes is just another word for it. Maybe it's even another state of being.

EL HIJO DE LA CUMBIA

Since I always like to discover new bands and DJ's which are far away from the mainstream and ldeal with bastard music in some ways, here goes another one. El Hijo de la Cumbia aka Emiliano Gomez aka Chimango Selectah from Argetnina is one of the new tropicalia-cumbia-producers, twho are entering the electronic scene in the US. He works as a producer and composer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, bringing out releases on the critically acclaimed Bersa Discos and Soot Records (NYC).

Music has always been there, so that Emilio already entered the stage at the age of 12, touring with bands around Argentina. Att the age of 16 he formed his own bands and got more into Reggae, Dub and Dancehall. However, music is such a broad field that the sound of Mexico, la Cumbia Sonidera, inspired him too, so he started working with important groups such as Super Changos or Pesadilla.

His style evolved and Cumbia, Hip Hop, Electronica, Dub and Roots are the main ingredients that define his sound of today. It's basically a modern southern mix of rhythms and a lot of Latin flavor. As a matter of fact, his first album was called “FreeStyle de Ritmos”. What else can I add to this? Fact clear. A unique mix of all musical influences and the feelings that inspired El Hijo de la Cumbia.

I just went to the In-Edit Beefeater music documentary event in Barcelona today and got blown away by the incredibly well done and funny documentary "Bananaz" from Ceri Levy about the making of the GORILLAZ.
So now, that I'm a bit wiser I can pass on some info here: The Gorillaz were made of Damon Alban (Blur) and Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl), both obviously very funny individuals to be around with and basically taking a piss out of the music biz. Gorillaz were the first band ever made of 2D characters, although the actual band behind the project is really a good mix of known artits such as De La Soul or the ex-guitarrist from Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. The making of the movie took 6 (!) years and the movie maker Ceri Levy actually became from being the coffee-man the man behind the camera.
Hip Hop meets Rock and comic characters meet funny real life persons, trying to clash certain stereotypes in music and innovate constantly. There's not much more to say, apart from go to the movie and watch it yourself! It's worth it! And I'm not the best describing a whole story behind moving images, which one has to see...

La Cantina are from Frankfurt, Germany. Where bear and bull shake hands to encourage German economy, La Cantina encourages to warm your soul with some soulfull music. In the middle of this modern banker city with an old center, the two guys Dirk Grimmer and Oliver Haas are mixing modern beats with ancient centered roots. Latin bounce meets Dub, DnB and Electro. They just produced their new album "Radio Rebelde" but also do some nice remix work as for Cashma Hoody's album Soundpool. So go check them out!

BOOM PAM - Puerto Rican Nights

Boom Pam from Israel released a new album on Essay Recordings called “Puerto Rican Nights”. It’s all Israeli boom pam trumpet music with a strong surf guitar in a Klezmer, Gypsy, Jewish, Greek Mediterranean mix-up sound systema style. They have played alongside Bucovina Club DJ Shantel, owner of Essay, and throughout the whole world - in small bars as well as on the biggest festival stages. The “Puerto Rican Nights” bring them back to smash rock stages and wedding parties and to travel the world again. Although I couldn't find out why the album is called "Puerto Rican Nights", because it's not necessarily very Puerto Rican, it has a fresh groove and comes up with some good collaborations. The Israeli singer Tomer Yosef from Balkan Beat Box (NYC)appears on one track and gives it a hint of a mediterranean reggae touch. The album itself is like a cocktail of all the different genres from Tel-Aviv, the whole multi-ethnic mixture. Boom Pam global genre clash in a Dick Dale style!

The BUG - London Zoo

The Bug, aka Kevin Martin, London's dark, deep and heavy dubstepraggapunk just released his new album "London Zoo" on Ninja Tune. After decades of making music his way, The Bug is back to torment our ears with 12 tracks of dubstep, grime, ragga, industrial and lots of Bass! - Heavy, deep, massive, dark, rough and infiltrating - going in the line of Stereotyp, Al Haca or Tolcha, and influenced by Jah Shaka, Adrian Sherwood, Lee Perry and Public Enemy. The Bug's sound is characterized by his noisy touch - very industrial, ambiental and bassheavy at the same time. Among former projects he was involved in are Techno Animal (industrial hip hop), Ice (experimental industrial hip hop) or Pressure (dubstep). An now The Bug is the result of all this. An urban creature from a big metropoli representing the sound of the underground.
Therefore, as a matter of fact, collaborations in "London Zoo" include other known faces from the scene, as Warrior Queen, Ricky Ranking and Tippa Irie. By the way, the artwork was made by Fefe Talavera, who just appeared at Barcelonas Hipnotik as Lil' Monster and who previously worked together with Al Haca.
That's all together a very arty piece I would say! Check the Bug out, he's on tour currently.

Leg NO - Dope & Hope

Music is a drug. And Christian Legno from London aka Leg-No knows it very well. He has been addicted to it since his early childhood. With 15 he started playing the drums, lateron he began making remixes and in 1996 he released his first album "TeknoMobilSquad 05" on Ultrasuoni Records. At the age of 19 he brought out his first single and worked on remixes for Mos Def and Clipse. And in 2004 he established his own Label "Touch Response Records".
Quite a lot of things in a short time, Leg-No is a busy man. But what about the music he plays, what keeps him going? Well - one thing for sure - Leg-No can't be fully defined, nor can he be labled. His music is a vast mixture of extreme bass lines combined with dubstep, wonky electro, wobbling house and glitchy hip hop. But it can be totally different, too.
His new album, “Dope&Hope” represents all his influences, but also involves some bits'n'pieces of Soul, R&B, Reggae and Grime. The vocals were recorded with well-known faces from the scene, such as Leeroy (Sain Supa Crew), Ghetto Priest & Spex Mc (Asian Dub Foundation), Emo Dada (singer of DJ Vadim) and the Finland collective Conscious Youths (Redrama, Paleface Mc e Capenape.). So, if addiction can be any positive to give hope, than Leg-No shows us how it goes. He creates a mixture that is dark, deep, soulfull and danceable at the same time. An eclectic mix of different bouncy genres.
By the way, apart from producing his new album, Leg-No also put his fingers on some fresh mixes for Spank Rock, Santogold and DJ Kentaro! So, check him out.

HIPNOTIK Festival in Barcelona

This weekend was dope. First of all there was the Hipnotik Festival with Al Haca, RQM, AFRIKA BAMBAATAA, Graffitti action and lots of music, breakdance, mc's contest and conferences in CCCB in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. And secondly in Madrid Stereo Mc's kicked a great DJ set with BaileFunk, Bmore, Bass and Hip Hop at Low Club and La Noche Blanca turnded the city into a big party.
Anyways, back on sunday to Barcelona graffitti artists were already taking over the CCCB and newcomers and old returners shared the stage in the sun. The guys from Debilorhitmicos from Barcelona played an awsome set of breaks, hip hop and old fashioned melodies making everyone go dancing, while Al Haca from Vienna afterwards got all into the roots electronic mix, playing the new KUBO tracks, Kuduro sounds and african electronic rap with deep basslines. The Lil' monster was there too, to make some dancing and additional vocals. Afrika Bambaataa was the last one to play as main act down in the basement hall, but unfortunately didn't surprise me as much, after all the bouncing acts from before! Sorry, big master. Nevertheless, the hall was packed as hell, the crowd went all crazy and seen from above, the air was an ocean of hands and arms moving forward and backward right according to the beat!

Noche Blanca Madrid - Virtual Streetart

On saturday "La Noche Blanca" turned the complete city of Madrid into one big party with performances, visual art, concerts and DJ sets. There was also supposed to be a guy from "Cirque du Soleil" walking over a 100m long and at least 20m high cable, located between to main buildings on Gran Via - without any net of protection above the ground. However, this event was unfortunately cancelled because of too much wind.

Due to the huge amount of things to see, I didn't catch as much, but stayed a while at Caixa Forum to see the virtual graffitti presentation of Omnivor Lab from Barcelona, presenting virtual drawings and graffittis - Street Art 2.0 - from Btoy, Lolo and Tohyto.
Instead of using the traditional street art to paint walls directly, the artists explored new ways to express themselves, using virtual methods to animate their drawings and let them grow itself on the wall.

Lateron the Instituto Mexicano del Sonido played together with Wagon Cooking and Jay Haze, to present their album Piñata, which came out last year. A good mixture of Dub, Chachacha and Electronics. Good stuff altogether!

Dub Gabriel, Dub and electronic producer from New York, now living in San Fransisco, just founded a new label called "Destroy all concepts". Among the releases is his latest album "Anarchy and Alchemy". Heavy, deep, dark and organic bass sounds. It's worth to check it out. Also, because Dub Gabriel just produced a cover version of a song from the band Suicide this year - and guess with whom - yeah right, Michael Stipe from R.E.M!

Wow, I love those parties that mix every style of music in such a way that borders simply blur and you can't stop dancing! Yesterday DJ Sabo from New York City was in Barcelona, playing a great set of bootyshaking music with BaileFunk, a lot of Bmore and Philly sound, Electro Ethno House and Funk. And he was rippin it! The guys from NYC are generally known to be good producers and to be as free as creative, just thinking of DJ Rupture, King Chango or Nickodemus. And yeah, Sabo is one of them. He does great mixes, played almost no known version of a song and has a groove, that I haven't seen for a long time in Barcelona's parties. The Sidecar Club was all packed and the party continued until half past 5, lateron went on in an afterhour around the corner of Plaza Reial. Yeah, I love those parties, and big up to you guys from New York that know how to do it! Thanx and hasta pronto*

BoTECOeletro is from Brazil. BoTECOeletro is eclectic. BoTECOeletro is electric. BoTECOeletro is brazilbeats handmade. Touring through Europe I catched him up in Barcelona to have a chat about the actual music scene, globalization, Internet and Brazilian music worldwide. Listen up and see more!

First of all, give us a short introduction about what you are doing and how you started with BoTECOeletro.
BoTECOeletro started actually when I was out of work. I had been working in event production and as a percussionist before. And when I was out of work I started to do some little things for the internet, some music jingles. I started to look for Brazilian music, folklore and popular songs, and out of this I made two different tracks of one minute each.

Afterwards in 2005 you brought out your first album "Brazilanity" with which you won the Brazilian prize TIM . How was the experience?
The TIM prize is one of the most important prizes in Brazil, so it was very important for me. It's a proof that things are going well. Not commercially, but artistically! The prize is given out every year by important people from Brazils music scene.

When you brought out your album, has there already been Brazilian electronic music as you do or was it something new to the people?
When I started I wasn't involved in the scene, because I came from another direction. But at the same time things started to move and more Brazilian music started to come up. But when it started I was in there as well.

When you started touring you played together with Men at Work and Suzanne Vega. That's quite a good start right?
Yeah of course! But things started as follows. I was working as a stage manager. But I was always playing an instrument as well, or percussion, so the artists usually asked me if I was a musician. And I said yes, of course! So they motivated me a lot to start as an artist again. I worked four years with a big rock band from Brazil in organisation, the "Titans". And I really liked them! But they told me, stop to work in organisation and play as a percussionist with us. So I went three years on tour with them. Afterwards, when the tour stopped and I didn't work, I started with BoTECOletro.

How is the music scene in Brazil right now? There is a big hype about the Baile Funk and electronic music in Europe at the moment. So how do you see this, since you have more insight in the things there?
Yeah, let's talk of the Baile Funk first. It's a very original and true music from Rio. And Rio itself is a very special city - because Bossa Nova, Samba, Forro and the Baile Funk are all from Rio. All those musical styles were born in Rio and are extended all over the planet now! Just imagine that. It's like the Jazz from the United States. However, the Brazilian electronic music has no space in Brazil. It's not really recognized there. That's why all the artists go to Europe and The States to play. We are concentrating a lot on playing in other countries. We don't really have a scene, or at least ther is no commercial scene. It's all very undergound!

Can you hear it on the radio?
No! And, sorry for the words, but that's real shit. There is so many music, Brazil is so rich in that, but you never hear it in Brazil. I mean, there is popular music like Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte, but you don't listen any of the rest. So, we go to Europe to play there, and when we come back, maybe afterwards they start to say: Ah, he played in Europe, mh, so let's see what he does.

You are playing electronic music with your computer and live percussion now. However, what are your roots, the real roots where everything started?
Rock! My first vinyl that I bought was Black Sabbath. And I really listened a lot of years to rock. Lateron I was also influenced by Samba, of course. But Rock is the main influence and then afterwards you just open for everything. I mean you have to be open, because there is so much!

How did you learn to play all the instrumentos that you are playing now?
I studied ten years of drums. Then I played in international bands and learned more instruments. And the percussion I learned over one weekend. They wanted to book me for a show the next Monday, and asked me on Friday. So I went to buy all the inmstruments, enclosed myself at home the whole weekend and learned! And BoTECOeletro was just an experimental thing afterwards, trying out a lot of things.

Globalization is a big word nowadays. And there are alot of things that come out. Do you think it's easier for an artist right now to do music and then easily go on tour?
I think that's for sure. Artists have a lot of possibilities nowadays. It's much easier than before, just because of the internet. When I went on tour in Europe last year everything was made over the internet. So the internet is a very important tool, and it's a result of globalization now. I mean, it's really boring and I don't like to do it, I prefer to do music, but it helps a lot. I have Hi5, Facebook, Myspace and all. But I think, I need to employ someone who can do this for me...

What are your plans for the future?
Well, I have some ideas. We want to do a project with two other musicians, that are doing more or less the same as me. That will be with computers and elctronic devices and live instrumentes. And then I want to tour with BoTECOletro with two female singers! That's will be good certainly!

You also have a new residency in Brazil. Where is that, how is the place?
That's in Copacabana. It's a really cool place, without walls, so that you can see the beach directly form the inside! It's really interesting, also because they do different styles of music every day. The owner, does the right thing. On Monday there is House, Tuesday there is Hip Hop, Wednesday there is me, Thursday there is Samba and so on. The idea is to program music to move the scene.

Stereo MC's new album out now!

The electrifying guys from Stereo MC's finally brought out their new album "Double Bubble", after a decade of no hear no see!
Funky breaks, electro, disko, hip hop - plus some melodic roots sounds. No way to stop dancing with that sh**!
Apart from that they also brought out a collab with MC Gringo on Berlin's label Man Recordings. So they are back and also doing what's new - some Bailefunk electro dance thing.

Stereo Mc's always had their special touch in terms of electronic sounds. I just remember "Connected", "Deep, Down and Dirty" and a really cool version of oriental drum's and electronic beats in "Fever" on the "Future World Funk" compilation.
And since I won two "Deep, down and dirty" vinyls on some multi-music-channel's website like some 8 years ago, they are one of the best anyways ;)

They are touring this summer, so check them out.

New exhibition in Berlin @ Wirrwarr

There is a new exhibtion in Berlin Kreuzberg, the alternative district close to the river Spree. Nicolas Simoneau, originally from Paris but now living in Berlin, is exhibiting his latest drawings, grafic designs and fotos in the Wirrwarr Cafe / Galerie.
The exhibt is from 27th of August until 4th of October.
The vernissage at the 29th also holds - apart from the typical clingin glasses and having fun - a concert with Anti g.one (Hip Hop) and Kakosonia (Poems).

Russ Jones (Future World Funk Collective)

Russ Jones has long been seen on the global world music scene. He's responsible for about a dozen compilations, ranging from bollywood, world funk to balkan and brazil flavor and he is running his Hackney Globe Trotter night in Londons famous Nottinghill Art Club, playing global house, funk, latinbreaks, balkanfever and any global eclectic sound. But that's still not enough. Russ Jones also helped to set up the label Far Out Recordings, is involved in the booking of the Glastonbury festival and currently works on a new Cumbia Compilation. There is almost nothing more to add, however, it's about time that he explains himself where all this productivity comes from!

1. When did you start spinning and with what kind of music?
1991, Funk, Jazz, Soul, Hip hop

2. How came your interest in all the different music from all over the world? Have you been travelling a lot?
Life too small to be narrow minded and discovering new music always leads to even more avenues opening up. It’s a continual process and it would seem all music connected somewhere somehow.

3. You are running the Hackney Globe Trotter (Future World Funk) night in London and also release loads of compilations with eclectic bands from all around the world. How do you mainly find the tracks, since they are always well-known but very danceable though…
From travelling, downloads, myspace, shopping people sendng me a stuff. Its quiet intensive

4. You helped to set up the Brazilian label Far Out recordings, how was working with all those artists such as Marcos Valle, and how is working in such a personal independent label?
It was great experience. Marcos and Joyce people like that are really cool. I made a lot of friends and have good memories

5. Your latest projects were the Gipsy Beats and Balkan Bangers compilations, with Balkan remixes released on Atlantic Jaxx Records from Basement Jaxx. How developed the collaboration with Basement Jaxx? And why Balkan?
They loved what I wa doing and approached me to do the gyspy beats compilations. It was a good partneship.

6. What do you think about the current hype of Baile Funk, Bass, Bmore and Disco music, which is floating blogs worldwide and lets new parties pop up everywhere?
I love it. It is the perfect dancefloor music and it would seem every dj has own versions and mixes. There are just too many out there. Its all good.

7. How do you see the London music scene?
Its great. So many people now get the wider scence. So you can play quite out there music at quite main stream clubs.

8. What are you currently up to, apart from DJing and collecting funky glasses?
Compiling a nu-cumbia compilation. Its going to blow up. Super hot.

9. What are your future projects…?
World domination through music and love!

Hanna Holland Interview

Hanna Holland is one of the pioneers of Londons Rave scene, being resident at the Trailer Trash and Batty Bass Parties. Her style is a genre clash, a raw mixture of house, techno, basslines, jungle and dubstep. A clash like Londons multi-musical scenes all together. With the raw electronic fusion wave bringing new sounds to the clubscene worlwide, it’s about time to ask one of the top DJ’s what it’s all about.

When did you start your DJ career and where? What where your main influences in the beginning?
Started DJing when I was about 19, at house and warehouse parties around London. My main influences were DJ friends , going clubbing since I was 13, and wanting to be more involved with my records!

You are resident at the popular Trailer Trash Parties. With whom are you playing and how came the idea up do that kind of party?
The club is run by Mikki Most, at the time there were a lot of electro house/techno parties in East London and he wanted to put something on for gay people and in East London they'r pretty wild, home to the most fierce queens, the night is always very hedonistic. Guests include Mike Monday, Sinden, Franz and Shape, Zombie Nation etc.

Is this the only party in that style in London or is there a lot more going?
It was pretty original at the time, now Eastend clubbing seems to be very mixed gay/ straight/ fashion/ music.

You are one of the few women DJing, among a mainly male scene. Is it rather an advantage or a disadvantage?
To be honest I dont take any notice, I just work hard to be good.

Do you prefer playing with DJ’s or with DJanes?
I dont care as long as they play good music!

How is the London music scene and what influence has it on what you spin?
The music scene is London is and always will be vast. You can go to a drum and bass club , then pop next door to a drag queen house night. I like to play with different styles, as that is what I have grown up with.

In your personal info on Myspace it says that your music is a culture clash. What’s the background for that? Has London as a multicultural city an importance for that?
For sure, I was very into jungle as a teenager, which is inspired by jamacian soundsystems, also Baile funk, Bmore, Breakbeat, and generally anything with a great bassline and rhythm I can find will be played. London is a melting pot of ideas. My sound is basically bouncy techno with dirty jackin bassy house, but I will drop a Breakbeat or Dubstep track in - I call it Batty Bass. When I put on my night Bastard Batty Bass I like to go all over the place with the music plus I have my Batty Bass crew, Mama and MC Chickaboo with me on vocals, so it has a raw insane party vibe.

What do you think about the Booty // Bass Hype and all the Bass-Ghetto styles from different countries that come up right now?
Yeah, I like some of it, although some of it is far too testosterone led for me and too fast! I like the music that Diplo pushes, Bailefunk and the Bmore stuff, it's fun!

Your parties seem to be very colorful, with lot’s of different (and very freaky dressed) people attending them. Goes the style hand in hand with the music?
Yeah we love our crowd, a real mixture of proper party people who love the music.

You'll also found your label Batty Bass. What are you going to release on it?
There will be releases from myself and the Batty Bass crew, Mama Shamone, Mc Chickaboo, Zombie Disco Squad, plus more.

Missill - Female Rock Power

Yes, there are still surprises in life. And that at times where music is getting more and more equal and as a consequence boring. However, there is a young multitalent from Paris who knows how to fight against that – just to show that another way’s possible! Her way!

MISSILL!

Although only 25 years old, this young lady has done loads of things until now. MISSILL is a graffitti artists, graphic designer and DJ at the same time. Even more, she is a trendsetter. Where others mix one vinyl after another MISSILL gives music a special touch – from Ragga to Breakbeat, Electro, Hip Hop, Bmore, Punk to even the old classics.

In graphic design she also knows how to set new standards. She started with graffiti in the streets of Paris, went on to flyers and posters for diverse parties, CD covers and then designed the layout for “Transmusicale Festival” in Rennes. By now she is working on a program with Hip-Hop-Manga figures, which can be combined with different hairs and clothes. Her debut album “Targets“ contains a comic strip and convinces with an energetic eclectic mix of real underground music mash up.

MISSILL!

How was the party yesterday for you, you played with Princess Superstar and Heidi at the famous Tresor Berlin?

Missill: Two things. It was a really good opportunity for me to play for the press. Germany is the first country to release the album and I’m curious to know how people will react. We do a tour in Germany right now and in France we’ll release the album in January. It’s really exiting for me! It was a good time to play yesterday at (0.30h), because all the press people where there, and usually all those guys go if it’s too late. On the other hand it was to early for the party-people, because they go out later. So I was more or less the warm-up for Princess Superstar.

You played for the Coca-Cola-Club-Tour. How come that you work with such a big name?

M: I worked with them before, because I always played at Rock am Ring, Rock im Park and Splash in the Coca Cola tent, also with Afrika Bambaataa.

And how often does it happen that you play with two other female artists?

Usually never. I mean it was a good promotion and Princess Superstar is very well-known, and for the promotion of the album the occasion was perfect. But usually I wouldn’t play at a party if they ask me only because I’m a girl. Foremost, I’m an artist…

You started 6 years ago as a resident in the „Rumble in the Jungle“ parties. Which music did you play then?

That was more classical Ragga and Hip Hop. All Vinyls, but since two years I switched to the Computer program Cerrato…

You released a Mix-Mash-Up album and now your debut. You have toured worldwide already. Is it a hard way to get where you are now?

Yes, because we are so many. We are already so many in the world and then we all wanna work in the fun and good things. I’m very happy every day that I do what I do. And if people ask me what I wanna do later it’s just the same: I want to continue with what I do. I mean it has to do with a lot of luck, that you’re at the right place at the right time, and it has to do with a lot of hard work. And a second part: risks. You don’t have money in the beginning and you don’t know where it goes, but you know you wanna do this. On the other hand I also do graphic design. So I wasn’t completely lost.

That’s the other part. You also design and do graffiti. Where does all this creativity come from? You do a lot of things and in addition very well…

It’s because I want to learn something every day. Since I’m 18 I really like Hip Hop and I always wanted to learn everything that’s got to do with it. The dance, the scratch etc. I didn’t do the dance very well but I liked the graffiti. And then I became part of the BMC Crew, with which I did parties and then designed the flyers.

Did you study graphic design?

No. I learned everything by myself. When I was 18 I made an internship and I was determined to do everything to get what I want. When you move out from home then you either do the typical thing and work in a restaurant or you take the worst way - to go the way of the art. It also got to do with that I can’t make anything I don’t like. I can only do what I really want deep from inside my heart. That has been like that for 9 years now. First I started to learn graphic design in an internship and then I asked everywhere if I could do the graphic for them. In record shops, restaurants and everywhere. The first was a kebab. I was determined to do everything to learn. Then I started to do flyers and so on. Afterwards I went to Canada for a year to a really good guy to do a 3-D training. I always want to learn something new. With the DJ’ing it’s the same. Vinyl became to boring to me so I started to work with Cerrato to create my own technique. You can do your own bootlegs and loops and everything. And I want to do even more, with Live and visuals and MC’s…

There will also be a comic for the album…

Yes, I’m strongly influenced by Japanese Mangas and I work with a Japanese guy together, who readapts my figures to do a comic strip. And for the website there are new comic characters, which you can put different clothes and stuff.

Your name is “Missill”, your new album is called “Targets” and your management is called “Full Force”. It sounds quite reactive, as if you would be always on fight…

Yes, first of all my name is Missill, because I’m speed, I’m very quick. But I didn’t see the connection with the management before. And „Targets“, because I put myself targets. I have a lot of targets and I want to put them all together. It’s all, the life, graphic, and the music. The album was a target as well, for example.

What are your main influences in music? You mix a lot of different styles from Breakbeat to Hip Hop, Ragga, with a rough punk style…

As time goes by you open your mind and if you travel a lot you look a lot for new music, and you find a lot as well. I take a bit of everything and then make my own style. All together is the Missill-Sound, but you never really know where it comes from.

Do you mix it before you play live?

I have a big base of music and sometimes I change some things on the plane. I never play the same, but I have to know all the pitches and I always have to play before. If you don’t do it, it will be shit. You have to know all the tracks, which are with loops, where is the cue and the pitch. And since everything is so quick I have to know it before, because I can’t check while I’m playing…

You went to Paris at the age of 18. Is Paris important for you and the things you do to be creative?

I think when you’re young you have to be in the capital. I come from the South of France, where there are only big wine fields. My father has a wine mountain. But I had to move. I mean, I have good roots, but I had to go. First I went to London to learn English. And then I spent a season in the mountains to earn money before I went to Paris, because it’s really expensive. I did everything I had to do before. But Paris was also a goal. The parties, the creativity and everything. If you want to be part of a scene, if you want to work, you have to go there.

Apart from making music yourself is there anything that really kicks you right now?

I like Kuduro, but the thing is that styles always come and go. I also like the Baltimore stuff, because there are many bootlegs, but I regret that they never masterize their tracks. So I always have to do. I spend most of my money for mastering. And I really like Baile Funk and Bootybeats. I also went to Brasil to the Favelas, where they gave me three CD’s full with new stuff. In Europe there is only Man-Recordings with this stuff. But the crazy thing is, that I shouldn’t play Baile Funk in Brasil!

Why that?

Yeah, because it’s music from the poor people and the rich didn’t want to hear that. And I said: What??? I’m in Brasil and I shouldn’t play Baile Funk? I can play that everywhere in the world! Yeah, and because of the dirty lyrics…

When did you start to produce your own songs?

That just came. I want to create all the time, because I want to play my own stuff. Because, there is no sense if you go to a party and one DJ plays seven songs and the next one the same. I use Cerrato to make it more personal. First I made Bootlegs and than Beats and if you have are searching the whole time and than you have the possibility to make exactly the beat you want, you do it of course. It’s so cool, when people dance to your beat! That’s a big experience. I play the tracks also when they are not finished. First I put one part and look how people react. Then I play more and create the track together with the people…

You produced your album together with Blurum. How did you start with this collaboration?

I knew him before becasue we had been on tour with Oneself and he wanted to do something for me. I showed him some loops and he said: Yeah, this one rocks! I finihsed it then, it’s the first song from the album and Blurum added his stuff to it. We have a really good connection to each other. And we shared a lot of intense moments and parties together. It was just a good vibe. Later I asked him for another track, but it didn’t really work. You know, sometimes you try really hard but it doesn’t work then anymore.

What are your next goals?

A Live-Show, with Ableton Live, with DJ Netik, the world champion in scratching, with MPC and Tess, the Beatbox and with visuals. To have a big show. But that’s a lot of work. I have my DJ level, because I have been playing for years, but for a Live-Show is something else. That’s the next goal and it’s really important to bring it all together, to show that I’m a graphic designer and a DJ and all!
